i’m the girl on the beach that sits and daydreams while watching the surfers in the water. i should probably learn how to surf myself, but at the moment i’m pretty happy with my camera in hand, watching the world go by.

these photographs were taken at a beach somewhere near gracetown. i was sitting on the sand when a black dog ran up to me and decided it was going to keep me company for a while. when the dog saw a person coming out the water, it would race down the beach to see who is was. after that it would trot back to me and look at me with weary eyes as if to say, ‘well, where is he?’ the dog was worried about its owner, out there in the surf.

i’m glad someone knows what it’s like =)

berlin is a pretty cool city. i was quite sick during our stay there, so i didn't get to see as much as i would have liked (the berlin wall, for example...). i did, however, enjoy watching people in the underground, taking pictures out of windows (when you're stuck inside a room for a while activity outside of windows suddenly becomes very interesting), and drinking green tea at a very cute cafe.

snow is a beautiful thing, yet it moves out the way for nothing. one of the things that struck me while travelling was how everything just seemed to keep on going, regardless of the weather. the trees still spread their spindly branches towards the sun, mothers took their babies for walks in the pram, traffic still made it's way through the city and boats and ships ploughed their way through icy rivers.

when nicole and i were in prague, we visited a toy museum that was inside the castle. there happened to be a barbie exhibition inside, and hurrah, photos were allowed :) I had a ball taking pictures of all the dolls in all their weird and wonderful outfits. i think my favourite is the one nicole and i dubbed 'extreme ken'!

i’m dedicating the month of april to film. i’m putting down my digital and embracing analogue for thirty whole days. and i’m encouraging you to do the same! if you have a film camera, lying around collecting dust or perhaps just neglected in favour of something sparkly and new, give it some love and insert a roll of film. you’ll find yourself thinking about each picture, savouring each shot and excitedly waiting for it to be developed. sure, some of them probably won’t work, but chances are the ones that do will have you smiling.

a while ago now my mum gifted me with some lovely fabric from 'ink and spindle' . lately i've started to get into sewing and thought it was about time that i used the fabric - so i made some cushion covers! i recycled some zips and the inserts from cushions that i didn't really like anymore, and zoomed away on mum's very old and heavy swiss sewing machine. they are far from perfect (i need a bit more practice still) but i do think they are rather pretty :)

san g is a little medevial town that nicole and i visited while in tuscany, italy. this place has been around since 332, and it used to consist of thirteen towers (some of them got bashed down in wars and things) that were made to see who could build the tallest tower.

san g is the type of place that you will find flower boxes out of every window, washing hanging out of impossibly high windows, little doors leading to secret pathways and amazing views of the tuscan country side.

it rained the day that we visited (the whole day! cue fashionable raincoats!) and a strange mist descended upon the whole city, making the whole thing pretty spectacular.

we have finally made it to St Petersburg! Russia is unlike anything we have seen before. Snow everywhere, fur everywhere and beautiful buildings everywhere!

This will probably be my last blog post 'abroad'! It has been an amazing ten weeks, and thank you very much to everyone who has followed along and left a comment. It makes Nicole and I so happy to read your thoughts!

this is florence. ta da! we spent quite a bit of time here, walking around town and drinking the best cappuccinos in the world. we took a day trip to the tuscan country side where the rain fell heavily on our heads and a mist covered the city.

on christmas day we climbed up to michelangelo's plazza and met peter, a man who has been living in firenze 'all his life' and could not be any prouder of italy, the home of gelato and dante! he couldn't quite believe it when nicole told him (in italian!) that her nephew had the same name :)

the colosseum in rome is a grand and historical piece of architecture. it is hard to believe that we were standing in a buiding dating back to AD80. for nicole and i, the colosseum was an opportunity to reflect on the persecution of christians in rome and see first hand the place where many christians were killed for their faith.

whilst the building was awesome to walk around in, it was saddening to see that there was barely no information about the historical significance of the colosseum as it relates to christianity. in fact, one of the only plaques that did mention it said that there was no 'evidence' to suggest that christians were ever martyed in the colosseum. the purpose of the colosseum as a portrayal of roman strength and power has not been diminished in the twenty first century and seems to be at odds with rome's huge emphasis on churches, christians and catholicism.

on the eighteenth of december nicole and i sailed from barcelona to rome. we sailed for twenty hours, crossing the meditteranean ocean. at one point we went up on deck to find the sun setting as we passed in between corsica and sardinia. we felt so blessed with the wind on our faces and the mountains of sardinia before us.

in between all the walking and talking and eating and seeing and eating and photo taking, nicole and i do occasionally take a pew in a cute cafe, drink something warm and write in our journals. nicole's journal is from the portobello markets in notting hill, while mine is from spain, a gift from my dear friend melinda.

another one of those things that i have to remember is to take out my holga! i've gone through a roll and a half of film, and i cannot wait to see what my plastic light box comes out with :)

my awesome travel partner likes to paint light with her pencils. while i am off on photographic adventures, i often find nicole sitting down somewhere, drawing the scene before her. i am always amazed at her drawings, because they are from perspectives that i have not considered. i love the fact that we can both look at the same thing and see it with totally different eyes.

barcelona is a bustling and vibrant city, colourful and diverse. we took a long bike ride along the coast, relaxed in the harbour and soaked up the atmosphere in park guell with musicians sitting beside us and children playing in the dusty square.

if you take out your world map, find france, then cast your eyes south to the coast, you will find a little place called nice. on the french riviera, and part of the cote d'azur, (sounds so fancy!) nice boasts brilliant blue medditeranian waters with a yellow sun to match. we spent five days with the sun on our faces, eating lunch in multi-million dollar harbours (just sandwiches we'd made ourselves mind you), going for walks along beach boulevards lined with palm trees and reading our books with views of the french coastline.

a day trip to monte carlo saw us trying not to get run over by ferraris and walking through immaculately well kept parks (it was illegal to walk on the grass). as we travelled from paris to nice, winding our way through the french countryside it was wonderful to be able to experience the diversity of landscape, architecture and people within france. au revoir, and onto the barcelona!

paris (pah-ree), city of lights and lovers. of tree lined boulevards and grandeur. we hiked the eiffel tower and walked des champs elysees (a famous shopping strip- hello cartier) before pushing through the crowds in one of the best christmas markets we've ever seen to date - we've been to 4 so far! we said hello to the mona lisa, along with a thousand others (which was probably more of a spectacle than the mona lisa herself!), and tread lightly through the sacred notre dame - although, the clink of money into vending machines made us wonder if it was more of a business than a church :) we finished off our parisian adventure with an obscenely large macaron, and now we are headed for nice!

paris is a grand city, excessive yet charming. everything sounds so much more beautiful in french, and we both delight in the simple token of saying 'bonjour' and 'merci' whenever we can :)

oh amsterdam! city of many bikes, canals, lovely tall buildings (some even leaning to the left or right) and soft snow :) an overload of photographs because i have seen so many beautiful things in the past four days. we have strolled along the canals, the arches framed by little fairy lights at night, shopped the '9 straatjes' for vintage wares, stood in awe at the etchings in the rembrandt house (that is where the books are from) and even met some of our friends from home :)

what has made holland so exciting is the fact that there are little things everywhere that we both recognise from home, whether that be olliebolein (spelling?!), croquette's (in the wall like a vending machine..of all things!) dropjes and so much more. it has been so nice to be able to visit holland and feel just a little bit at home amongst all that is dutch :)

the city of edinburgh is one of the most beautiful i have ever seen. there are old buildings everywhere, thousands of years of architecture and history and stories that span generations. we got to scotland with the sun shining in our faces, and left with snow falling on our backs. a magical couple of days.

i love old books! i have started a collection of old hardcover books with some pretty famous names etched into the spines like enid blyton, agatha christie and charles dickens. i love the little notes that are sometimes written on the insides, reminders that these titles were once owned and loved by someone else. the oldest book in my collection is from 1940, but i am always scouring the op shops for more books to add to my ever growing pile.

oh my, lemon meringue pie! i spent my afternoon making this little beauty. my first attempt at shortcrust pastry, and it actually went quite well. sure, my little pie isn’t as robust as the one in the picture (cue not being vigorous enough with egg white beating), but it does taste pretty fine! tangy and sweet and crunchy, all at the same time. who wants a piece?

say hello to the diana mini! i recieved this little thing from charlie , a fellow photographer! diana is so small, she fits into the palm of my hand, can be worn as a neck peice and can only be handled with little fingers! despite a few technical issues (everything is so small and hard to get to), i had lots of fun taking pictures and i think she'll remain a part of my growing film camera family. the best part? square pictures!! my favourite is the one of the seashore and footprints in the sand.

we go to port gregory almost every year for the summer holidays. this place holds many memories, so it seemed fitting to capture them with the lens and put them to tune.

our visits to port gregory are often characterised by the wind. i wrote the song with that in mind. i wanted to call it 'it's always too windy here so we can never go fishing', but that would probably be too long, so for now, it's just called "the wind". this is one of the first songs that tim and i worked on together, and i'm so happy with how it has turned out. i hope you enjoy it too :)
